Saw palmetto comes from the berries of a small palm native to the southeastern United States. It has been used for generations by men, mostly for urinary and prostate comfort as they age. Today it also appears in hair and men's vitality formulas. Here is what it actually does.

What does saw palmetto do for men?

  • Prostate and urinary comfort: the most studied use. Results are mixed — some studies show modest improvement in urinary comfort, while larger trials found little difference from placebo.
  • Hair: it may modestly slow the conversion of testosterone into DHT, which is why it appears in hair formulas. Evidence is early.
  • Hormone balance: because of its effect on DHT, it is included in men's formulas as a supporting ingredient. It is not a testosterone booster on its own.
